The IRS uses Letter 2788C to request that you update your address with them, thinly veiled as an inquiry. The IRS also sends this letter to Businesses.
In many notices, the IRS also attaches LT16 to request an updated address.
Response to Letter 2788C
It is not always wise to call the number listed at the top of the letter but it might be worthwhile just to see what is the status of your account. Listen to any advice from the IRS but do not necessarily follow it. Attorney advice is more valuable.
But, in many cases you simply need to file Form 8822, by certified mail, with the IRS. the next time you file a return, your address will be automatically updated but until then file Form 8822 so you continue to receive notices.
Remember, the IRS can investigate and find your whereabouts for purposes of collecting from you. It is up to you to change your address to continue getting correspondence. It is important to continue to receive letters so you know what is happening.
